The Journal is addressed to a wide, international circle of philosophers, aestheticians, theoreticians and art historians as well as to the artistic environment. The scientific interests thereby include the general and detailed philosophical-aesthetic issues of different fields of art, problems of theory and art history as well as artistic questions.

The beginnings of The Polish Journal of Aesthetics date back to 2000. Prof. dr hab. Leszek Sosnowski then proposed the idea of establishing a philosophical and aesthetic journal. His idea was received by prof. dr hab. Franciszek Chmielowski, prof. dr hab. Piotr Mróz, dr hab. Andrzej Nowak and dr Andrzej Warmiński. This led to the creation of a periodical whose thematic profile was expressed by the slogan: "aesthetics and critique." The authors of the project, adopting such a broad modality, remained in the area of academic philosophy and at the same time expressed their conviction about the need to open the pages of the journal to art itself, expressed in various forms by artists, critics and its theoreticians.

The Journal operated under the name Estetyka i Krytyka until 2017. Since January 2018, it is called The Polish Journal of Aesthetics.

The Journal is published by the Institute of Philosophy of the Jagiellonian University in Kraków, Poland.

The Journal has been operating internationally for several years. Thematic volumes in English are published and prepared in collaboration with researchers from around the world. The Scientific Board of the journal is systematically expanded, and the list of reviewers includes internationally renowned scientists. The development of the journal also includes its presence in subsequent international indexing databases.
